The Problem With ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 3

When it comes down to it, the problem with Game of Thrones is simple: there are too many characters. Or maybe more specifically (and more grandly), the story George R.R. Martin is telling is just too complicated to turn into a television show. I know, this is a crotchety, old lady opinion —- “I just can’t follow it! What’s that dwarf’s name?” — but the fact that I’m the person having this reaction highlights what’s wrong. I am not an old lady, but a gently seasoned follower of complex fantasy storylines. And in the book, they make sense.

re-watch each episode. or read the books. it’s worth it. SO worth it.

A $2 million Kickstarter campaign launched today is going so fast, it could fund a big-screen version of the long-cancelled cult TV show “Veronica Mars” by TOMORROW. Show creator Rob Thomas and star Kristin Bell are helping drive the fast, fast, fast fund-raising.

So, besides the folks plunking down cold, hard cash for this campaign, who out there is revved up about a big-screen version of this show?

Kickstarter continues to impress me as a platform. In many ways, they’ve taken the notion of the FB “Like” to the next level and are acting as a reflection of societies interests and intentions. It’s a radically simple mechanism whereby individuals say “I like that idea / product / activity enough that I will pay for it.”

My favorite part of all is that this is essentially market research without the false pretense of being impartial and clinical. People let you know what they are making, or want to make. You evaluate it and decide whether or not it’s relevant to you. No focus group testing, no two way mirrors, no 50 question surveys.

More to come.

So far, I’ve kicked in towards a Pebble (just received), the last Cody Chestnutt record, and an iPad Brydge keyboard that I’m using to type this. I’ve had a couple of contributions that didn’t pan out (but won’t detail here). Kickstarter keeps getting better.
